The phone only rang once before he answered. âDan Reilly.â
She smiled at the familiar raspy voice. âItâs me. Angel.â
âSweetheart, itâs past midnight.â Worry edged his words. âIs anything wrong?â
âEverything is fine. I just hadnât talked to you in a while andââ
âAngel. You donât call in the middle of the night to say hello. Whatâs going on?â The police sergeant was smart and shrewd, and she knew heâd never settle for less than the truth. Heâd also never let up until she told him. âI was talking to a friend tonightâ¦â
She hesitated, but the memory of Jakeâs regret spurred her forward. Angel took a deep breath. âAnyway, this guy happened to mention how his brother died and heâd never even told him he loved him andâ¦â
âYou thought of me.â
âNo.â Her cheeks grew hot. âI mean, yes.â
âHoney, Iâve known you a long time. I know how hard it is for you to say what you feel.â
Of course, he knew. Heâd been more of a father to her than anyone. But Jakeâs words had hit close to home and made her realize sheâd never told the man that had rescued her from the streets all those years ago what he meant to her.
âI love you, Dan,â Angel said simply. âYou saved my life that day. Then you saved my soul when you brought me to Christ. I can never thank you enough.â
âYouâve repaid me many times over, sweetheart.â The manâs voice was husky. âYouâve been like a daughter to me all these years. Iâve watched you grow into a fine Christian woman who lives her faith. I couldnât ask for more.â
Tears welled up in Angelâs eyes and she let them slip down her cheeks, not even bothering to brush them aside. âIâd better let you go. Itâs getting late. You take care.â
âYou, too,â he said softly. âAnd, Angelâ¦â
Her fingers tightened around the receiver. âYes, Dan?â
âI love you, too.â
Angel dropped the phone into its cradle and leaned her head back against the sofa. Her thanks was long overdue. Now she would have no regrets, whether Dan lived one more day or fifty years.
She smiled. God had brought Dan into her life when sheâd needed him most. Now Heâd brought Jake. Only God knew if he was destined to be just a brief player in her life or part of some greater plan.
Meeting Jake had already had an impact. Hadnât she finally said the words she should have said years ago to Dan? Why was it so hard to tell those who mattered most to you how you felt?
Angel lifted her eyes heavenward and thanked the One whoâd been her strength these past ten years. From now on she wouldnât hesitate to say âthank youâ or âI love you,â frequently and loudly, to both God and her fellow man.
What about Jake? a tiny voice inside whispered. Are you going to tell him âthank youâ? What about âI love youâ?
She pushed the ridiculous thought aside. Dan was right. It was late. And she must be even more tired than she realized.
